Description

The Bartley monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 3 metres south of the porch of the Church of St. Thomas a Becket. It dates from the third quarter of the 18th century and is made of limestone. This fine monument features a plinth and oval fielded panels on the main sides, adorned with angels in the spandrels. The ends have rectangular fielded panels with flanking consoles that display stylised floral carvings. It also has a moulded frieze and a flat top. Originally, the tomb was enclosed by a railing, but only the stone footings remain today. The monument commemorates Betty Bartley, who died in 1769.
