Description
This is a late 17th-century house, originally one building and later divided into two separate dwellings at numbers 27 and 28 Church Street. The house has a rough stone exterior, a tiled roof (formerly thatched), and a brick chimney on the left side. It is arranged in an "L" shape, with number 28 forming the front range and number 27 acting as a rear wing. The front of the house has two floors and three window bays. The ground floor has planked doors on either side, a central 19th-century three-light mullioned casement window, and a 19th-century single ovolo-moulded casement window to the right. The first floor has two original 17th-century three-light mullioned casement windows with leaded lights and a 19th-century two-light mullioned casement. The left return has a 20th-century single casement window, and a 19th-century casement window on the first floor. The rear wing has an external chimney with offsets to the gable end and both three-light and two-light mullioned casement windows. Inside, the house features planked doors and a wide moulded beam. The beam was traditionally said to support a panelled ceiling, although this is now concealed by a later ceiling. An old postcard shows the house and identifies it as South Court Manor, the birthplace of Edmund Ludlow in 1616.
