Description

The Old Vicarage is a detached house that was originally built as a vicarage between 1843 and 1844 by Chapman of Frome, with an additional wing added in 1883. It is constructed from dressed limestone and features a Welsh slate roof with diagonally set pairs of stone stacks. The building has a rambling plan with rear wings and is two storeys high with three windows across the front.

On the left side, there is a two-storey projection that includes a gabled porch with a ribbed inner door and a stone oriel window on the first floor. The gable has an open quatrefoil vent with a shield. To the left of this projection is an external stack with offsets. The right side features a range with 2-light and 3-light casements that have hoodmoulds on both the ground and first floors, all of which include margin-panes.

The left return of the building has a square bay with a 3-light mullioned window and a parapet to the right, as well as a 3-light casement with a hoodmould to the left and two additional casements on the first floor. The rear of the house includes a central wing from the 1880s with large casements and a triple sash window. The right wing has a 20th-century conservatory attached, which features margin-pane French windows and a 2-light casement with a hoodmould above.

The right return has lean-to services, an external stack, casements, and a triangular attic dormer. The interior is reported to retain its original fittings. The building ceased to function as a vicarage in the 1970s.
