Description

The Old Blacksmith's Shop is a blacksmith’s workshop dating from the mid-19th century, with an attached pigsty from the early 20th century.

It is built from red brick, local rubble stone, and flint, featuring timber roof structures covered in slate and a timber loft. The forge is made of brick and includes a brick chimney. An iron anvil is mounted on a stone block, and there are fitted timber workbenches along the walls. Most windows have metal frames and chamfered brick architraves, while the rear window is made of timber. The floors are primarily earthen, with some areas covered in poured concrete, and the loft is boarded.

The building is aligned northeast to southwest and faces southeast, arranged as a single-room smithy with an entrance from an adjacent open-fronted workshop area that has a loft above. At the rear, there is a lean-to pigsty with a separate entrance and a walled enclosure.

The main elevation features a cart opening on the left and two wide window openings on the right, both under cambered brick heads with chamfered architraves and metal frames. The end and rear elevations are constructed of rubble stone and flint with brick banding. The south end has a small loft opening in the gable, while the north end has a wide metal-framed window. To the rear left is the lean-to pigsty, and to the right is a two-light window opening at the back of the smithy, along with a walled enclosure that includes a concrete trough.

Inside the smithy, the space is open to the roof, featuring a brick forge positioned forward from the back wall, with the anvil and block located to its left. Workbenches are fixed to each wall, and there is a loft opening accessed by a ladder to the right of the plank entrance door. The forge retains all its operational components, and there are electrical fittings in the room. The roof structure consists of two queen post trusses with struts, high collars, and iron straps, supported by two rows of purlins.
