Description
Melksham House is a detached house with a side wing, currently serving as a sports and social club. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate hipped roof, with ashlar stacks that have moulded capping. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has six windows.
A central porch, added in the 19th century, is two storeys tall and has a round-arched opening with a keystone, imposts, and a square drip mould. The door within the porch is flanked by Tuscan columns. On the right side of the porch, there are two plate glass sash windows, while the left side has plate glass sashes and a two-light beaded mullioned window. A continuous string course runs around the building, including the porch. The porch itself features a three-light chamfered mullioned window on the front and two-light mullioned windows on the sides at the first floor, with cross windows on either side. The moulded eaves cornice of the porch is topped with a pierced parapet and ball finials. The roof has three hipped dormers with casement windows.
The right return of the house has a sash window on the ground floor and a cross window on the first floor. The left wing, which is from the 18th century, has been altered in the 20th century and is also made of rubble stone with a stone slate hipped roof. It is two storeys high and features cross windows and 20th-century insertions on the ground floor. The first floor has four hollow chamfered two-light mullioned windows and a projecting chimney stack. The rear of the property has a large 20th-century attached sports complex. The house is included in the register despite the 20th-century alterations and rear additions, as it is a good example of an early 18th-century house.
