Description
The Granary, located south-east of Hazelbury, is a granary and cart-shed range built in the late 17th century. It was converted around 1922-1925 into a garage, cottages, and workshop by Sir H. Brakspear. The building is constructed of rubble stone, partly roughcast, with stone tiled roofs, coped gables, and corniced ashlar stacks and hipped dormers added during the conversion. It is one and a half storeys tall and features an open courtyard plan, accessed through a low wall between the wings.
The main range has a chamfered basket-arched doorway with a drip stone and an oak plank door to the left, along with a recessed chamfered single light above. To the right on the ground floor, there is a 2-light recessed mullion window with a hood. The doorcase bears the inscription "John Pritchard 1766." The north wing includes a plank door on the inner face, while the south wing features outside stairs leading to a loft door under a dormer gable to the right, along with a renewed 2-light window at the ground floor center and a single light to the left.
Both gable ends of the wings have renewed 2-light windows with hoodmoulds on the upper floors. The ground floors originally had open 2-bay cart-sheds, and the outer sides of each wing still show original 2-light windows with hoodmoulds. The north gable end of the main range has an original attic light and an inserted garage. The three rear dormer gables, dating from around 1922, include one that reuses an original window.
