Description
St Mary's Hall is a building located in Malmesbury that was originally a church. It was rebuilt between 1670 and 1680 and later extended and altered from 1830 to 1845. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble and has a slate roof. The plan consists of a rectangular rear hall with a front range of chambers.
The exterior is single-storey with a four-window range and features two parallel ranges with coped gabled ends and quoins. The southern range, dating from the 19th century, has a thin cornice and an openwork parapet decorated with cusped triangles. The windows are arranged in three and four-light configurations, each with elliptical heads and label moulds, and there is a central doorway with a four-centre arch. The gables are one-window each, except for the left-hand rear gable, which has a relieving arch from a former window and a mid-19th century ashlar gabled bellcote. There are reports of a gabled porch.
Inside, the hall has been largely remodeled in the mid-20th century, but the earliest inscription dates back to around 1672. Historically, this site was formerly St Mary's Church, Westport, which replaced a fine medieval church that was destroyed around 1643 during the Civil War by Sir William Waller to prevent the enemy from using it for shelter against the garrison of Malmesbury.
