Description

Kemms is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It is constructed partly from flint and sarsen boulders, and partly from timber framing with wattle and daub, much of which has been replaced with brick noggings. The building is single storey with an attic. The original structure runs parallel to the road and contains a central living hall, an inner room, and a kitchen located behind a major chalkstone stack. The kitchen features a separate, possibly later, fireplace with an oven that is now blocked.

On the left end, there is a forward wing that is likely an addition, providing a cross passage at the rear of the lateral stack of the kitchen and covering the probable position of the first lobby entry. This wing contains two bays of accommodation that are unheated, possibly serving as a dairy and cheeseloft. The kitchen bay of the original structure is made of stone, while the rest is timber framed, and the re-entrant facade of the wing is also framed. The framing consists of three panels high with corner and tension braces. There is a boarded door leading to the cross passage, and timber casement windows, along with altered stone mullioned windows featuring labels on the gable of the wing facing the road. The roof is half hipped.

Inside, the living hall, inner room, and kitchen all have deep chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. The fireplace includes a stopped chamfered mantel beam with chalkstone jambs. The main chamber above has a moulded stone arched fireplace. There are many 17th and 18th century doors, and the wing retains its original door and frame from the cross passage. The relationship between the stone and timber construction in this house is complex and not entirely clear.
