Description

The Columns, located north of the drive to Lacock Abbey, is a garden ornament from the mid 18th century that features a re-erection of a large ashlar paired chimney stack from the mid 16th century. It consists of two fluted Roman Doric shafts topped with a full entablature, all standing on a high panelled pedestal. The north side displays a strapwork cartouche with lozenges at each end. Above the entablature is a carved stone sphinx, which is said to be the work of Benjamin Carter, who was active from around 1735 to 1766.
