Description

The Cooper monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard about 6 metres south of the tower of the Church of St. Thomas a Becket. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of limestone. This fine monument features a plinth and an oval fielded panel adorned with egg and dart moulding, as well as angels in the spandrels on the main sides. It is flanked by urns draped with fabric and has quarter balusters at the corners. The end panels are oval, and there is a grooved frieze decorated with rosettes, topped with a shallow weathered surface. The monument commemorates William Cooper, who was the master of Tilshead Boarding School and died in 1804.
