Description
This building, originally a court house, likely dates to the 16th century and was substantially rebuilt around 1680, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is now a house and village store, incorporating numbers 1 and 3 Cliff Road. The exterior is of squared and coursed rubble, rendered to the north front, with a steeply pitched plain clay tile roof and two stone stacks, one with a brick cap. The building is two-storey and five bays wide, with 4-pane sashes to the ground floor of the two bays furthest to the left and larger shop windows to the remainder of the ground floor. The upper windows are also 4-pane sashes. A large, elegant shell hood is above an ornate doorway, off-set to the left, with a double-glazed door. Other exterior details include a moulded plinth and a coved cornice. The east end wall has two glazed openings with blocked stone surrounds and two flush, cambered-headed strainer arches above a moulded first floor string course. The interior features a late 17th-century plaster ceiling in the ground floor room to the left, with a central floral rose, a moulded oval compartment, and sprays of fig and oak leaves in the four corners. A late 17th-century staircase has square newels and turned balusters. A dado panelling and a concealed 17th-century fireplace are in the first-floor room to the left. There is evidence that further plaster ceilings have been lost in the ground floor shop. A vaulted lock-up is located in the basement, and a 17th-century roof structure remains.
