Description
Maud Heath's Monument is a Grade II listed structure built in 1838 from ashlar stone. It features a seated statue of Maud Heath atop a high column that is square at the base and chamfered to an octagonal shape at mid-height, finished with a moulded cap. The base is square and the statue itself is crudely carved, depicting a figure in what is supposed to be medieval dress, with a basket by her side.
Inscribed on the base are the words: "Erected at the joint expence by Henry Marquis of Lansdowne Lord of the Manor and Wm. L. Bowles Vicar of the parish of Bremhill. Trustees 1838," along with a verse by Bowles that reads: "Thou who dost pause on this aerial height Where Maud Heath's pathway winds in shade of light Christian wayfarer in a world of strife Be still and ponder on the path of life." The monument is surrounded by spearhead iron railings.
This monument commemorates Maud Heath's gift in 1474 of income from property to maintain a raised path from Wick Hill to Chippenham.
