Description
The marker stone opposite Monument Farm is a listed structure of uncertain date, standing about 1.5 meters high. It features an affixed cast-iron plate that reads, "From this Wick-Hill / Begins the Praise / Of Maud Heath's Gift / To these Highways." Additionally, it notes that "The translation into English verse of the earlier Latin inscription on the stone was made by the Rev. W.L. Bowles Vicar of Bremhill in 1827." This stone marks the starting point of the footpath from Wick Hill to Chippenham, which is maintained due to the gift from Maud Heath of Langley Burrell made on June 12, 1474. The stone may date from 1698, coinciding with the erection of a column at Kellaways Bridge and a corresponding marker stone at Chippenham Clift.
