Description
Nos. 1, 3, and 5 Church Street is a range of three cottages, with Nos. 1 and 3 likely having originally been a single house. They date from the 17th century or earlier and were superficially remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. The cottages have solid rendered walls, with the front designed to imitate ashlar. The roof is slated, with No. 1 having a tarred finish.
There is a large rendered chimney with a tapered cap on the right end wall of No. 1, and a smaller chimney of the same type on the right end wall of No. 5, which has been heightened and has a secondary flue added beside it. Additionally, there is a small rendered chimney on the left end wall of No. 5. The buildings are two storeys high with a garret.
The fronts are symmetrically arranged in two groups, each consisting of two widely spaced windows with doorways in the center. Nos. 1 and 3 form the right-hand group and have paired doorways under a single flat hood supported by shaped brackets. The windows at Nos. 1 and 3 feature small-paned 19th-century wood casements, with three lights in the ground storey, each having eight panes, and two lights in the second storey, each with six panes and a five-pane transom light above. There is a dormer with a pent roof above No. 1, which contains a two-light wood casement with two panes per light.
At No. 5, all the windows have box-framed eight-paned sashes. The doors are all late 20th-century, with plank doors at Nos. 1 and 3 and a glazed door at No. 5. This listing is included for its group value.
