Description
117 and 119 Winner Street are a pair of shops with accommodation above, dating from around the 1830s, although they have later shopfronts. Number 117 is roughcast with applied timber-framing, while number 119 is stuccoed and has been blocked out. Both buildings have slate roofs and stacks with rendered shafts.
The buildings are two storeys high and have a 1:2-window front. Number 117 features a late 19th or early 20th-century shopfront with a half-glazed door on the right and reeded brackets supporting the fascia. The first-floor window is an early 19th-century twelve-pane sash, and the second-floor window is an early 19th-century three-over-six-pane sash. Number 119 has an early 20th-century shopfront on the left, which includes a moulded cornice on moulded brackets, and a cartway to the right. The shop door is glazed with a low panel to the left, and there is a plate-glass shop window to the right, flanked by pilasters with sunk panels.
The ground floors have been altered for their current use, but there may be interesting features remaining elsewhere in the buildings. Historically, Winner Street was the main medieval thoroughfare in Paignton and was named after the bishops' vineyard.
