Description

This is a house, built in the 1830s, potentially incorporating an earlier structure, located on Winner Street in Paignton. The building includes the walls to the rear courtyard. It is a double-depth house with a central entrance and a second doorway to the right.

The exterior is cement-rendered with a pitched, asbestos slate roof and gabled ends. A moulded eaves cornice sits below the fascia. The symmetrical three-bay front has a recessed central front door with a reeded doorcase, an entablature, and panelled reveals, topped with a half-glazed door. Ground-floor windows are eight-over-one pane sash windows. The first and second floors feature six sixteen-pane sash windows. A recessed half-glazed door with a plain overlight is situated to the right of the main entrance. The rear elevation includes 20th-century replacement windows. The rear courtyard is enclosed by red breccia walls.

The interior was not inspected, but may contain original features. Winner Street was historically the main medieval thoroughfare in Paignton, originally named for a bishops’ vineyard.
