Description
This is a pair of shops with living accommodation above, likely built in the 1840s, with alterations dating to the 1860s and later shopfronts from the late 19th or early 20th century. The building is constructed with mass walls, faced with stucco, and has a slate roof with gabled ends, brick chimney shafts, and cast-iron gutters.
The building is three storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window frontage on each side of a central cartway. Deep eaves are trimmed with a fascia, and a platband runs along the line of the second-floor window sills. The shopfronts feature rusticated pilasters with paired consoles supporting the fascia. A recessed panelled door provides access to the accommodation above, and the shop windows are canted. The first floor has four windows with moulded architraves and sill blocks. The second floor has four segmental-headed windows with stucco voussoirs, a moulded keyblock, and break a moulded string course. Number 72 retains its original hornless 12-pane sashes throughout. Number 70 has been reglazed with plastic windows but retains original window embrasures and decorative details. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of architectural interest. Winner Street, where the property is located, was originally the main medieval route in Paignton, named after the bishops' vineyard.
