Description
The Marrillier Monument, located north-east of the Anglican Chapel at Torquay Cemetery, is a memorial dedicated to Robert Aspland Marrillier, Deputy Lieutenant of the North Riding, who died in 1903, along with other family members. This tall, tapering monument is made of white Italian marble and features an oversailing cap adorned with an egg-and-dart moulding and acroteria at the corners. At the base, there is a fine, naturalistic life-size sculpture of a mourning woman seated and holding a wreath of flowers. The figure is described by Brooks as potentially being a portrait and is noted for its Italian craftsmanship.
