Description
Craig Court Hotel is a villa dating from the 1850s, located on Ash Hill Road in Torquay. Shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Esdaile, it is built in an Italianate style. The main rectangular block, of double-depth plan, faces west, with an entrance on the south side. A set-back service wing adjoins the north end.
The asymmetrical façade has a 2:2 window arrangement plus a conservatory on the right. The main block features deep eaves, rusticated quoins, an eaves band, and a moulded string at the level of the second-floor sills. The first floor has two tripartite windows with 2 over 2-pane sashes, horizontal glazing bars, and Venetian shutters. The ground-floor window on the left is similarly glazed, but with a moulded architrave. A late 19th-century canted bay is to the right, also with a moulded architrave and 2-pane windows. A three-bay verandah runs across the front, supported by timber posts with brackets and a lead roof. The service wing to the left has an eaves band, platband, and sash windows with horizontal glazing bars. The conservatory has segmental leaded, three-light ribbon windows and decorative late 19th-century iron cresting on the ridge. The south side has a flat-roofed porch with a parapet and sunk mouldings. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
