Description
No. 2 St Marychurch Road is a villa built in the late 1840s or 1850s. It features a pebbledashed exterior and a natural slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts topped with very tall chimney pots. The building has a large rectangular double-depth plan, consisting of two rooms wide and extended at the rear in a matching style, now connected to the Upton Vale Baptist Church, which is not included in this listing.
The villa stands three storeys high and showcases Tudor style windows with Dutch gables and a chamfered string course. The entrance elevation, which faces St Marychurch Road, is asymmetrical with three bays and two windows. It has three Dutch gables, with the central bay slightly projecting forward. A central chamfered doorway is topped with a stepped dripmould. Above the doorway, the first-floor window features a dripmould and a chamfered frame, and is fitted with a 2-light high-transomed casement with moulded mullions. The second-floor window is a 3-light unit with 20th-century glazing. The right-hand bay contains three windows with 20th-century glazing, while the left-hand bay is blind and has a shallow projecting stack.
The left return of the building also has three Dutch gables, with a corbelled stack in the centre flanked by one-light attic windows, each with dripmoulds. On the ground floor, there are canted bays on the left and right sides from around the 1860s, featuring 4-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars, and a blind recess in the centre. The first-floor windows, also with dripmoulds, are fitted with high-transomed casements that have moulded mullions. The Lymington Road elevation shows evidence of an extension to the left, although the chamfered second-floor string and parapet with cornice have been continued across. The original block's windows are 2- and 3-light high-transomed casements with moulded mullions and chamfered frames, while the ground floor windows are fitted with 20th-century small-pane casements. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
