Description

A terrace of five houses, numbered 8 to 16 Horsepool Street, was built in the early and mid 19th century, and may incorporate earlier structures. The walls are solid, rendered and roughcast, with roofs covered in slate, the pitches and shapes of which vary. Ridge chimneys are present, with a large rendered chimney at numbers 8 and 10, and a small painted stone rubble chimney between numbers 14 and 16. A smaller rendered chimney stands on the right-end wall of number 16, with two large rendered chimneys at the rear, one serving a rear wing. Number 8 is double-fronted, while the remaining houses are single-fronted. Numbers 12 to 16 have garrets.

Number 8 is two windows wide, with a doorway situated between the ground-floor windows. Houses 10 to 16 are each one window wide, with doorways to the right of numbers 10 and 12, and to the left of numbers 14 and 16. Number 8 has a late 20th-century plank door and a worn doorstep of Devonian limestone. A canted bay window with a top entablature is located to the left of the ground storey. The windows are 2-paned box-framed sashes, each with a single horizontal glazing bar. Number 10 has a late 20th-century six-panelled door, two old worn steps of Devonian limestone in front, and a shoe scraper attached. A canted bay window to the left features three pairs of 6-paned sashes on the ground floor, and a sash window with 4 over 8 panes above. Houses 12 to 16 have matching small-paned, box-framed sash windows; with 8 over 12 panes on the ground floor and 8 over 8 panes above. Number 12 retains a 19th-century six-panelled door with its original letterbox and handle. Number 14 has a late 20th-century six-panelled door, with three Devonian limestone steps in front of it. Number 16 has a late 20th-century glazed wood door and four Devonian limestone steps. Gabled dormers are present at numbers 12 to 16; numbers 12 and 16 have 2-light wood casements, each light of 2 panes, and a plain wood casement at number 14.
