Description
1, 2, and 3 The Quay is a terrace of three houses located in Lower Brixham, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The fronts are solidly rendered, while the exposed part of the left side wall at No. 1 is slate-hung. The houses have slated roofs and feature rendered chimneys on each end wall, with a painted brick chimney on the left side wall of No. 2. Each house is three storeys high with a garret and is one window wide. The ground storey has shop fronts; No. 1 has a late 19th-century design with two display windows angled towards a recessed door, topped by an entablature. The windows are tripartite wood with plain sashes, except for the third storey window at No. 1, which has a late 20th-century wood-framed window with a transom light. The houses have prominent flat eaves-cornices, with No. 1 featuring a deeper cornice supported by paired brackets. Each house includes a dormer window of different design; the one at No. 1 is mid or late 19th century, gabled with plain bargeboards, slate-hung sides, and two-paned sashes. The interior of No. 1 was inspected but has no notable features. According to a 1975 listing description, No. 2 retains an enclosed stone rubble stair block at the rear that provides access to Higher Street, a feature originally common to these Quay houses, though it is no longer visible from Higher Street.
