Description

Broad Blunsdon Manor House, formerly known as Manor Farmhouse, dates back to the late 16th century and has elements from the early 17th century. It features an 'L' plan design constructed from rubble with a stone tile roof, standing two and a half storeys high with a cellar. A modern porch is located at the angle of the building. The house has ashlar chimneys with moulded capping, which are diagonal when in pairs. The left wing has two bays, while the right wing has one bay, both fitted with glazing bar sashes. The gable ends are adorned with open pediments or triangular labels above the windows on the first and attic floors. The west side has two gables, one of which has a pair of chimneys, and a staircase with a mid-19th century window featuring intersecting glazing, along with several very small windows. The rear of the house has two gables; one features later brick diagonal chimneys, while the other has triangular labels above sash windows and blocks at the lintels and at the level where the transom has been lost.

Inside, the house boasts interesting architectural details, including a square-plan Jacobean staircase with three landings, heavy balusters and handrails, and corner and centre pillars that are panelled at the corners. There is arcading between the pillars on the first-floor landing. On the first floor, there is a fireplace dating from around 1600 with plain panelled spandrels and a rounded stop chamfer. The ground floor parlour also features a circa 1600 fireplace with panelled spandrels and high stop chamfers that are cut back. The doors to the parlour and cellar have decorative stop chamfers that appear to be later than the early 17th century.
