Description

The Broad Blunsdon War Memorial Cross is a stone memorial located in the main path of Broad Blunsdon's cemetery, which opened in 1889 after the churchyard of the nearby Church of St Leonard was closed.

The memorial features a Latin cross that rises from a moulded collar atop a tapering shaft, which is octagonal in shape. This shaft stands on a square plinth, all of which is mounted on a three-stepped base. The names of the fallen are incised into the faces of the plinth, with leaded and painted lettering. Each inscription includes the rank, name, battalion, date of death, and age of the deceased.

The main inscription on the north-west face of the plinth reads "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE, WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919" followed by five names. The north-east and south-west sides of the plinth each list an additional eight names. The south-east side of the plinth includes a later addition, which records the names of those who fell in the Second World War, reading "1939 - 1945" followed by six names.
