Description
The Church of St James is a Grade II* listed medieval parish church, likely incorporating the memorial chapel of William de Putot from 1221-28. It dates from the 13th century, with later medieval alterations and 19th-century rebuilding and modifications by James Foster of Bristol in 1812, and Pope, Bindon and Clarke in 1851. The church is constructed of pennant stone rubble with freestone dressings and consists of a nave, chancel, north aisle, north chapel, vestry, and a south porch with a tower above.
The tower is three stages high, featuring an embattled freestone parapet, pinnacles, and an octagonal spire that was raised in 1851. There is a square stair turret at the north-east and diagonal buttresses that rise through only one stage. Below the tower is a 13th-century porch with an inner doorway that has deeply undercut mouldings, detached shafts with waterholding bases, dog-tooth ornament on the capitals, and a restored trefoiled niche above the arch. The windows are mostly in the perpendicular style and have been largely restored, with some being pointed and others square-headed. The west door is relatively plain but has two flanking niches that contain small shield-bearing knights.
Inside, the church features a nave arcade with three perpendicular arches, a 15th-century font, and a 19th-century roof supported by angel corbels. There is also a marble tablet commemorating Edward Andrews, who died in 1758, and a medieval wooden chest located in the porch.
