Description
The Mangotsfield War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1919 by the parishioners of Mangotsfield to honor the men from the parish who lost their lives while serving their country during the First World War.
The memorial is made of granite and is designed in the shape of a Latin cross, which stands on a stepped base. It is situated in the center of a hexagonal flower bed that has a matching granite surround. The front of the memorial features a plaque, which has become obscured by a hedge as of 2015. The inscription reads:
THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHIONERS BY VOLUNTARY EFFORT IN THE/ YEAR 1919 TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL AND/ REVERENT MEMORY OF THIRTY ONE MEN OF/ MANGOTSFIELD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919 AND WHOSE NAMES ARE RECORDED ON THE REVERSE SIDE OF THIS CROSS. THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.
On the rear of the base of the cross, which is now treated as the front of the memorial, there is a bronze plaque that lists the names of 31 men, including their ranks. Additionally, a small bronze plaque with a name was added at a later date and is attached below the main plaque.
