Description

The Goods Shed at Yate Railway Station, dating back to 1844, was designed by I.K. Brunel for the Great Western Railway. The building is constructed of brick with Bath stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof, featuring a diagonally-set brick stack to the office. It has a rectangular plan and incorporates Tudor Revival detailing.

The shed is single-storey and comprises three bays. The south elevation has two 4-centred arches forming doorways, the left-hand one serving as a goods wagon entrance for a siding extending through the building; this entrance is now clad with corrugated sheet. To the right is a matching stone arch, originally for goods access, which has been infilled with brick. A small, single-storey, lean-to office is centrally placed, featuring stone pointed-arched window openings on its south and east elevations. A single window with a stone surround is situated in the gable of the main shed. The west elevation, facing the main railway line, includes end pilasters and three chamfered, pointed-arched stone window surrounds, now infilled with ashlar. The north elevation has a single-rail wagon gateway with a pointed-arched stone surround and full-height timber gates also clad in corrugated sheeting, and evidence of two lower gabled structures which have been removed. The east elevation features a full-height opening flanked by brick pilasters, with two sets of plank double doors within a weatherboarded surround. It is reported that the interior retains its original trusses, although it has not been inspected.

This building represents a complete example of a Brunel-designed goods shed, dating from the early years of railway development in the country, displaying group value.
