Description
Southend House is a farmhouse dating to 1664, as indicated by the date above the east door. The exterior is rendered, with a double Roman tiled roof and rendered stacks, including a diagonal stack over the parlour chamber. It is a two-storey building with attics, featuring steep stone gables and three bays. The windows are casements with 2-, 3-, and 4-lights, with blocked openings in the attic’s upper parts. A 20th-century door is centrally positioned. A 19th-century lean-to extension adjoins the right side. The rear elevation, originally the front, presents a two-storey gabled projecting porch with a plank studded door within a double ovolo moulded surround featuring elaborate stops. To the left of the porch is a three-storey stair tower, with windows featuring ovolo moulded mullions.
Inside, the parlour has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a fireplace with a moulded 4-centred lintel, and a double spice cupboard to the right with incised panels. Above the fireplace are plaster overmantels decorated with rose and fleur-de-lys motifs arranged in squares and lozenges. The hall similarly features stop-chamfered beams and a fireplace with a moulded lintel, along with a newel stair. The parlour chamber retains plaster overmantels matching those in the parlour, and a carved surround to the fireplace. The roof structure comprises extended collar beam trusses.
