Description
Rectory Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, now a house, located on Toghill Lane in Doynton. It was altered and extended in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with stone dressings, long and short quoins, and a double Roman tiled roof with raised coped verges and kneelers. Brick gable stacks are present. The design is a U-plan with a symmetrical front.
The farmhouse is two and a half storeys high with five windows, and features three small gables topped with ball finials. The ground floor has four stone cross windows with wide ovolo mullions and transoms, each with a hood mould. The central doorway has a bolection-moulded surround and hood mould. Five similar windows are located on the first floor; two replacements from the 20th century are present, one on each side. Each gable has a matching two-light casement window with a wide ovolo mullion and hood mould, with 20th-century glazing. A single-storey lean-to addition was built in the 20th century on the left side, featuring a window.
The left return displays a rear wing with a small gable topped with a roll finial, a three-light casement window, and a 20th-century three-light window on the ground floor. The right return features a single-storey addition with a pitched roof, and two-light and single-light windows. The rear elevation has a central two-light casement window, similar to the front, lighting the stairwell, and a matching window on the first floor to the left, featuring leaded lights. Three small gables with roll finials are present; one window is blocked, and another is open to the right, with the mullion removed and a hood mould remaining. A 20th-century addition to the left contains a plank and batten door in a chamfered surround, and a two-light casement window. A central, two-storey, flat-roofed extension, with a window on each level and an attached porch, has also been added. A rear wing on the right features a 20th-century door with a timber lintel, and a small gable partially concealed by a 20th-century extension.
Inside, a former through passage is now open to the rear porch. The front right room has chamfered and scroll-stopped beams, open to a former dairy at the rear. A wide central hall leads to a winder stair in the rear right. This stair has a square newel with a recessed panel, a moulded handrail, turned balusters with knobs, and a closed string. The front left room retains a heavy cambered and chamfered lintel over the fireplace. On the first floor, the landing's stair has a larger moulded handrail with curved splat balusters, some of which have been replaced. Beams are present as on the ground floor, except in the first-floor rear wing, where they are chamfered and step-stopped.
