Description

The Malting House, along with the former malting house and single storey workshops at the rear, is a house and malthouse located on the north side of High Street in Marshfield. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and is constructed of ashlar with a slate mansard roof featuring coped raised verges, a moulded coped parapet, and a moulded eaves cornice. The building has two storeys and attics in dormers, with a three-bay façade and rusticated end pilasters. There is a plain band above the ground floor and 16-pane glazing bar sash windows. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door beneath an overlight, framed by a doorcase with reeded pilasters and a flat stone hood.

To the rear, there is a former malting house built of coursed squared rubble, also with a slate roof and coped raised verges. This structure has two storeys and a basement, featuring five bays with two-light casement windows in freestone surrounds that have arched heads and lead cames. The first floor projects over an arcade at the south end. Across the yard, there is a range of single storey workshops that match the malting house, which includes four single light arched windows and three plank doors in plain surrounds.
