Description
The garden wall and archway, located about 20 metres west of Sands Court, dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, limestone rubble, and freestone. The wall stands approximately 3 metres high and extends 45 metres long, continuing about 20 metres along the north side of the garden, where it features a brick facing towards Sands Court and rubble at the rear, topped with stone coping.
The wall ramps down at the centre and rises to a central feature, which includes a cartouche adorned with an oval and swags, topped by a winged dragon, the crest of The Codrington family, with a coronet set into the wall on either side. Below the dragon, there is a pointed arched doorway with a brick head and timber lintel. Additionally, the wall has a window opening to the north and buttresses at the rear.
