Description
The engine house located between numbers 58 and 60 Cock Road is a Grade II listed structure, believed to date from around 1820 to 1830. This small, tall rectangular building has two storeys and is constructed from rubble with occasional zinc-slag quoins and some brick dressings, topped with a pantile roof. The building features simple fenestration, including one long window on the south gable and a blocked arched opening on the north gable, which is positioned above an off-centre blocked opening that has a timber lintel. The latter is partly occupied by a later casement window with a cambered head. The entrance is located on the east side, also off-centre, and has a cambered brick-tiled head, with a plain window above it. This engine house is part of a small, fairly complete colliery, typical of the area, though no machinery remains.
