Description
The Old Turnpike is a tollhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a double Roman tiled hipped roof, designed in a Gothic style.
It is a single-storey octagonal structure. The north elevation has a central door with a 4-centred arch, raised fillets, and a relieving arch. On either side of the door are two small 2-light casement windows with Y-tracery, leaded lights, and 4-centred arched heads, each with a relieving arch above. To the right of the main building is a lower wing that has one similar window without Y-tracery.
The right return of the building features one similar window and a 20th-century lean-to porch. The left return has two similar windows; the right window includes Y-tracery and leaded lights, while the left window has only leaded lights. The interior has not been inspected.
