Description

49-54 Emma Place is a late 18th century terrace of houses, surviving as Nos 49-54 after the demolition of Nos 55-59. The buildings are stuccoed or rendered with stucco detailing, and have dry slate or asbestos slate roofs hidden behind a stuccoed parapet with a moulded entablature. Hipped roof dormers are present, along with brick or rendered end stacks and stacks over the front pediments of the end houses.

The houses follow a double-depth plan, with an entrance hall to one side of the front room in each property, except for No. 49, where the entrance hall is behind the front room on the left. Externally, the buildings are two storeys plus attics over a basement, and each house has a three-window front, with the buildings divided by giant pilasters. Nos 49 and 54 feature pediments with small central attic windows. No. 54 was originally central to the terrace. Many of the original hornless sash windows remain, some with glazing bars, others with horned replacements. Small, enclosed porches with round-arched doorways and round-arched blind side windows are incorporated in the design. The parapets have moulded cornices, and No. 49 has a porch to the centre of its left-hand return. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. The terrace forms part of a group representing some of the most complete early 19th-century housing in Plymouth.
