Description

This is a planned terrace of houses located on the north side of North Road East, Plymouth. They were built in the mid-19th century, likely around the 1860s, and are a notable example of Victorian urban housing. The houses are constructed of stucco, decorated with stucco detailing, and have dry slate or asbestos slate roofs hidden behind a moulded cornice. Each house features a segmental-headed dormer window in the roof, and stuccoed end stacks.

The houses follow a double-depth plan, with a single room at the front and an entrance porch leading to an entrance hall on the right. The exterior presents two storeys plus attics, with each house featuring a three-window range, including a blind central window. Most of the original hornless sash windows, many with glazing bars, remain in place. Stucco details include channelled rustication to the ground floor, with an exception where one house has a recessed segmental-arched panel with a single window. A moulded mid-floor cornice projects forward above the porch entablature and over round-arched first-floor windows, which are each topped with moulded hoods on impost cornices. The porches have pilaster cornices and stepped entablatures, with 20th-century outer doors concealing what may be original panelled inner doors.

The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to contain features of interest. The terrace is significant for retaining a large number of original sash windows, a rare occurrence in Plymouth given the extensive damage caused by the Blitz. It is part of a good group of terraces, as shown on a map of 1867.
