Description

A group of five houses, numbers 42 to 45 and 45A Adelaide Street, was built in the mid-19th century to designs by John Foulston as part of a planned terrace in Stonehouse, Plymouth. The houses are constructed of stucco with stucco detailing, and have dry slate or asbestos slate roofs concealed behind stuccoed parapets. Numbers 43 and 44 feature a moulded entablature, while number 45 has a pediment and moulded entablature over pilasters. Dormers are present in the roof, and there are brick end stacks.

The houses have a double-depth plan, with one room at the front and a side entrance for each property. They are two storeys plus attic, and each house is two windows wide except for number 45, which is one window wide. The windows are four-pane hornless sashes in number 45. Number 44 has replacement windows that are intended to look like the originals, with twelve panes and hornless sashes, the ground-floor window also having a spoked fanlight head. Later 20th-century windows are in the remaining openings. The ground-floor window openings have round-arched heads with recessed round-arched panels.

The central doorways are pilastered and have moulded hoods supported on consoles, with overlights above. The interior was not inspected, but is likely to retain original features of interest. These houses represent a rare survival of a planned group by Foulston, exhibiting a simpler style than his work around the Hooe.
