Description
This is a terrace of houses built around 1815 in Wyndham Square, Stonehouse, Plymouth, designed by John Foulston as part of a planned development. The houses are constructed of incised stucco with prominent sill bands, featuring dry slate roofs with projecting eaves and rendered stacks over the cross walls. The layout follows a double-depth plan.
The terrace is symmetrical, with a prominent central three-bay section broken forward and topped with a pediment. Each side of the central block features a three-window range set back, and has a three-window canted end. Number 30 retains original hornless sash windows, although much of the glazing has been removed. Other windows are late 19th or 20th century sashes, with Number 29 (left) retaining some glazing bars. Moulded hoods are positioned on brackets above the first-floor windows in the centre of the pediment and also above the centre of the flanking ranges.
The ground floor has round-arched openings with moulded arches and impost strings. Many ground-floor windows have spoked fanlight heads, and similar fanlights are present above the doorways. Number 34 retains an original panelled door, while the others are later replacements. The interiors are not documented but are considered likely to be of interest. The terrace forms part of a rare, largely complete, planned group of buildings by Foulston, demonstrating group value.
