Description

A crescent of nineteen houses dating from 1865-67, now used as various hotels, situated at Anchor Head, Dauncey’s Hotel, Lancaster Hotel, Somerset Legion House, The Crescent Hotel, and Claremont Crescent. The houses are built of ashlar with rusticated ground floors, most of which are painted. They are three storeys high with attics, and generally have two windows to each house, with the central house featuring four. Porches have flat entablatures supported by columns with floral capitals, and some retain large pineapple finials. The attics of the central five and end houses have tall stone gabled dormers with broken segmental pediments, while some houses also retain lower gabled dormers with broken pediments. The front of the crescent facing the sea is particularly imposing and less altered. The windows are mostly sashes with plate glass.
