Description

No. 1, South Road is a mid-19th century Gothic villa. The description refers to the building as it originally appeared, not including later extensions to the right. It is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and quoins, and has a slate roof. The villa is three storeys high and features a gabled wing facing the road. This wing has a two-storey bay window with set-off, heavily moulded architraves to the windows of the bay; the first-floor windows have arched heads, while the ground-floor windows are square-headed and incorporate panels of blind quatrefoils. A blocked, intersected two-light window is set into the gable. To the right, set back from the main wing, is a two-storey porch. This porch has curved, clustered shafts supporting a triangular hood with an enriched tympanum, and contains the original Gothic door. Originally, the windows were large-pane sashes, but most have since been altered. Some new windows have been added.
