Description

The Toilet and Cottage at Goblin Coombe Campsite is a former holiday cottage built around 1922, now part of the campsite. The building features brick walls with external rendering and a slate roof. It is a single-storey structure with a full-width verandah at the front, supported by timber posts. The far left end is filled in with weather-boarding, which extends to a flat-roofed, single-storey, weather-boarded room. There are short brick chimney stacks at both ends of the rendered section. The central entrance has a cast iron plaque above the doorway that reads "MARJORIE SKINNER CAMP," along with the initials of her parents, "MMS" and "WHS," placed diagonally in the bottom corners. The door is flanked by two tall two-light casement windows. An additional parallel range was added to the rear of the building in the later 20th century.

Inside, the cottage has a two-room plan. In the right-hand room, there is a brick fireplace with a circular dedication plaque above it, which includes Marjorie Skinner's name and the dates "1919-1922."

The campsite was established by the Reverend and Mrs. Skinner following their daughter's death from tuberculosis in 1922. Its purpose was to provide underprivileged families from Bristol with the chance to holiday in the countryside. The building reflects the social efforts of the 1920s to address health and fitness issues, as seen in the design features like the verandah and large window openings. It is an early example of philanthropic holiday camp accommodation.
