Description

No. 2 Church Road is a detached cottage, possibly a chantry house, dating from the late 15th century and altered in the early 19th century. The building is rendered and features a pantile roof with coped raised verges and rendered stacks. It has two storeys and three bays, with multi-pane sash windows beneath drip moulds that have square stops. The central plank door is set in a chamfered ashlar surround with a 4-centred head. To the right, there is a single storey, two-bay extension from the 20th century. Inside, the cottage has wide chamfered beams throughout. The left room contains an ogee and hollow moulded ashlar fireplace with a 4-centred head, while the right room has a square ashlar fireplace with a chamfered surround. It is believed that the original roof structure may still be intact. Documentary evidence suggests that this building could have been constructed as a chantry house for the chantry priest of Sir Richard Choke, whose monument is located in All Saint's Church.
