Description
Claverham Dovecote is a dovecote located 40 metres west of Claverham Cottage, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of rubble with a roof of clay pantiles and shingles, and features cast iron elements. The structure is a single oblong cell with two plank and batten doors on the east side; one door is at ground level and the other is on the first floor, although the external stairs have been lost. The ground floor has two blocked oculi on the north and south sides. The roof is a truncated pyramid shape that rises to a square panelled cupola, which is supported by stop-chamfered members. The cupola includes bird entrances on the north and south sides and has a thin 19th-century weathervane. Inside, the ground floor is plain, and there is a 19th-century cast-iron stepladder leading to a boarded first floor that contains five tiers of nest boxes, with six boxes along the long axis and four along the short axis. The dovecote is situated at the west corner of a walled garden, which was formerly part of Claverham House.
