Description

The walls to the kelp pit, located at Tresco, date from the 18th to 19th century. They are constructed of uncoursed granite rubble and originally featured sloping sides lined with flat stones. The kelp pit was used for drying kelp, which was stacked between layers of brushwood in shallow pits. Kelp harvesting was introduced to the islands in the late 17th century and became an important source of additional income, as it was used in the production of glass, soap, and bleaches.
