Description
The Chapel of St Margaret and St Anthony is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 13th century. Originally, it served as the chapel for a leprosy hospital. The structure features ironstone walls and a modern tiled roof, topped with a timber bell-turret at the west end. It is a single-cell building without a structural chancel. At the west end, there is an attached cottage, known as No 1 St Margaret's, which may have been the original priest's house. A 16th-century timber-framed wall separates the chapel from the cottage.
The south wall includes a blocked pointed arched doorway at the west end, with an inserted window. There is a two-light 13th-century window in the chancel, along with modern two-light gothic windows in the nave. The east wall of the chancel, which has been repaired in brick, features a round-headed 18th-century window with timber glazing bars, reflecting a domestic style. The north wall contains a two-light 15th-century window in the chancel and a two-light modern gothic window in the nave. A pointed arched doorway from the 13th century is located in the center of the nave, while a 15th-century pointed arched doorway is found at the west end. The interior boasts a simple arch-braced waggon roof with exposed rafters. The altar table is from the 17th century, while other fittings are modern. The building is referenced in Hutchins' History of Dorset.
