Description
The Parish Church of St Andrew is an Anglican church primarily dating to the 15th century, with a chancel added in the late 13th century. It was restored in 1890. The church is constructed of rubble stone walls with ashlar dressings, and has lead roofs with battlemented parapets to the aisles and porch; the chancel has a coped gable. The church comprises a nave, north and south aisles of three bays, a chancel, a north porch, and a west tower.
The three-stage west tower has a battlemented parapet with corner pinnacles. A square stair turret is located on the north side. It features buttresses to the west angles, and a moulded string course with gargoyles at the base of the parapet; string courses are also present on each stage, along with a moulded plinth. Belfry windows are double-light with Perpendicular tracery. The main west window is of five lights, also with Perpendicular tracery, and the west doorway has a moulded pointed arch. The aisle walls are buttressed with diagonal buttresses at the angles, and contain windows of four lights with Perpendicular tracery. A pointed arched doorway, under a square hoodmould, is centrally located on the south aisle wall. The north aisle wall has a porch with a pointed arched doorway, supported by circular shafts. A small blocked window is situated at a high level within the east end of the north aisle wall. The north and south chancel walls each have two double-lancet windows, and a central buttress. The east window is of three lights and has been reset. Ten consecration crosses are carved into the buttresses and windows.
Internally, the walls are plastered. The chancel has a 19th-century pointed waggon roof. Several 18th and early 19th-century wall tablets are present. The chancel arch, dating to the 15th century, is moulded and features shafts with floral carved capitals. The nave has a 15th-century waggon roof with moulded ribs and carved bosses. Low-pitched 15th-century lean-to roofs are present in the aisles, with moulded beams and curved bosses; the main beams are carried on wall shafts. The nave arcades feature composite piers with foliage and animal carvings. The tower has colour-washed arches, and the north aisle roof is similarly treated. Altar rails are from the 18th century, with turned balusters. A brass dating to 1531 is fixed to the south aisle wall. The base of a 13th-century font has been re-set into the west wall of the aisle, with a good 18th-century monument located above it. A simple 15th-century font is also present. 15th-century benches are located in the nave. A monument of 1649 is on the west wall of the north aisle, depicting a kneeling figure. Crown glass is in the aisle windows. The pulpit dates to circa 1920 and was made by Willan of Yeovil.
