Description
Whatley Mill is a detached house, originally a flax mill, built around 1830. The building is constructed of rubble-stone with a slate roof, featuring gable ends. A stone bellcote sits on the south-east gable end, topped with a flat cap, while a 20th-century brick chimney is located on the opposite gable. The mill has two storeys and attics, and contains four 2-light casement windows with 20th-century wooden frames, each with stone lintels and keys. A loading bay is present in the attic gable, now clad in plastic weatherboarding and covered with a pitched slate roof. The front door, located on the gable end, is a 20th-century plank door with seven glass panels set within a wooden frame. Inside, a datestone marked "F. 1836" is found in the attic, commemorating William Frampton. The roof structure features heavy square-section beams, chamfered with run-out stops, high-collars with two sets of butt-purlins, and a large iron bracket at the ridge.
