Description
Bagber Bridge is a road bridge located on the boundary between the parishes of Stalbridge and Sturminster Newton, built around 1850 by engineer W. Davis and the Coalbrookdale Company. The bridge features a single span constructed of four cast iron girders that are prestressed with wrought iron bars, giving each girder an arched rib profile. Beneath the bridge, there are tie rods for additional support. The abutments are made of coursed rubble and include a string course, small square piers, and capstones. The bridge is finished with cast iron railings supported by chamfered cast iron stanchions. This structure is notable as an early example of prestressing techniques in bridge construction.
