Description

Farmhouse. It is probably of 17th-century origin, with rebuilding in the 18th century and a cross wing added in the 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed from squared, coursed rubble and ashlar, with hipped and gabled slate roofs and brick stacks at various locations. It is two or three storeys high, with an irregular arrangement of windows. The south wall has two stone mullioned windows of three lights, the lower one having a returned label. The north front has three-light 18th-century stone mullioned windows. A wide wooden plank door sits under a wooden lintel. The 19th-century wing incorporates sash windows and casement windows with leaded lights and has a panelled door with a flat hood. The 19th-century wing has a chamfered plinth and a moulded cornice. The house has a large moat and is all that remains of the former settlement of Thornton, which was once a separate parish.
