Description
Nos 18 and 19 are a house, likely originating in the 16th century and substantially refaced in the 18th century, and now used as two cottages. The construction is timber frame with brick, featuring a greensand ashlar plinth. The roof is thatched, half-hipped on the left and gabled on the right, with brick stacks positioned to the right gable and to the left of the front door. The two storeys are arranged with a four-window range. The windows are predominantly 3-light casements with leaded lights; the upper floor window above the doors is a similar 2-light casement. Some of the right-hand windows contain diamond-paned glass. Ground floor windows are set beneath segmental brick arches. There are paired front doors.
Internally, the layout features three rooms arranged around a cross-passage, which backs onto the central stack. The building demonstrates true-cruck construction, with visible traces of soot-blackening and some plank and muntin partitioning. The hall appears to have had an internal jetty. Originally, the house seems to have been an open hall with a ceiled solar and possibly an integral byre. The hall was subsequently ceiled, a stack inserted, and the building was refaced and converted into two cottages during the 18th century.
