Description
Saint Aldhelm's Church is a private chapel built in 1898, designed by architect G. Crickmay for Lord Eustace Cecil. The church features rock-faced ashlar lower walls with smooth ashlar above, and the nave walls are buttressed. It has tiled roofs adorned with ornamental ridges and a corbel course at the eaves, which includes carved heads. The structure comprises a nave, chancel, west tower, south porch, and north vestry. The west wall of the tower is constructed as a full-width buttress with offsets, topped by a pyramidal stone-slate roof with a weathervane. The belfry has arched openings that frame the bells, and there is a corbel course below the belfry. The lower stage features 2-light windows, while the porch has a pointed-arched opening with shafts that have moulded caps. The nave contains lancet windows, and the chancel has single and paired lancets, along with a triple lancet east window. Inside, the church has fairfaced stone walls and pointed timber barrel ceilings in both the nave and chancel. The chancel arch is supported by responds with foliage carving, and there is a semi-circular tower arch. A simple stone font is present, and the furnishings appear to be contemporary. The east window glass is by Kempe.
